Your treatment plan is designed around your symptoms, your personal situation, and the established medical guidelines for this form of treatment. So far, around 75% of people who have been treated with rTMS for depression state that their symptoms have subsided, often significantly. A course of 20-30 treatments alongside Cognitive Behavioural Therapy can vastly improve your chances of recovery.

Are you interested in learning more about rTMS? We'd be delighted to welcome you to one of our clinics for an informal chat.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

rTMS helps people with obsessive-compulsive disorder by reducing, or in some cases eradicating, problematic symptoms.

A coil is wrapped around your head for 20 minutes and emits magnetic pulses into certain areas of the brain. More than 60% of our clients with OCD have found that rTMS offers beneficial results in around 20-30 rTMS treatments when combined with cognitive behavioural therapy sessions. We recommend scheduling at least two to three therapies each week.

Treatment with rTMS has almost no side effects. Some clients may experience a mild headache after the treatment, but this tends to recede by itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here, you will find more information about our methods.

Is rTMS safe?

rTMS is a safe and scientifically based treatment for depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The treatment is applied briefly and intensively and is supplemented with cognitive behavioural therapy for best results. Magnetic pulses are delivered to the brain for around twenty minutes while you are talking with one of our practitioners. The pulses cause stimulation to or muting of certain parts of the brain. This helps improve communication between the different areas of the brain and reduces the associated depressive symptoms. rTMS will never cause any damage to your brain. The treatment is NICE approved and the FDA..

I use medication. Can I start with rTMS?

If you are taking medication for your condition, treatment with rTMS can be carried out simultaneously, and your medication may subsequently be phased out. Each patient is treated individually on a case-by-case basis, so the options will be examined in more detail by your clinician and decisions made based on your own personal situation and treatment plan. Any reduction in medication will be done in consultation with your prescribing doctor if desired.

Do I need a referral from my doctor?

rTMS international is a private practice. You do not, therefore, need a referral from your doctor for treatment at rTMS International.

Will the cost of rTMS treatment be reimbursed by my insurance company?

Whether a treatment (with or without rTMS) is reimbursed under supplementary insurance depends on your insurer. It is advisable to check this with your insurer beforehand. The differences between insurers are large: from a full reimbursement to no reimbursement.

Why haven't I heard of rTMS before?

rTMS is a technique that was only introduced in the late 1990s as a treatment for depression. Since then, a wealth of scientific and clinical research has been conducted to determine the safety of the treatment and to investigate the most effective protocols. It has been established that rTMS is a safe method that, for a large proportion of clients, contributes to the reduction of symptoms of depression and/ or compulsive complaints. Various publications show that clients who had previously had a “therapy-resistant” diagnosis responded positively to treatment with rTMS. rTMS has been approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in the US since 2008; and a number of Dutch health insurance companies have reimbursed clients for the cost of their treatment under supplementary insurance provisions since 2017.

Does rTMS treatment hurt?

Treatment with rTMS does not hurt and has few to no side effects. You sit in a comfortable chair and the coil that delivers the magnetic pulses is placed above your head. The magnetic pulses stimulate certain areas of the brain and decrease your depression and/ or compulsive symptoms. Treatment with rTMS can cause a mild tension headache after the treatment ends. This dissipates on its own soon afterwards, or you can take an over-the-counter painkiller if required.

Is there a waiting list?

There is no waiting list. You will be invited to an introductory meeting at rTMS International within a week of making contact with us. Treatment can commence as soon as we have evidence that a recent EEG has been carried out.

What does rTMS treatment cost?

On average, 20 to 30 rTMS sessions are required for lasting effects. We recommend that patients attend talking therapy at the same time as undergoing rTMS treatment. This can be either with our own psychologist or with an external provider. Because the options vary depending on your condition, your requirements and your preferences, it is impossible to state definitively how much your treatment will cost. However, we are happy to schedule an introductory meeting with you during which we will suggest a schedule customised to your needs, and we will be transparent about the cost of your treatment so that you can make an informed decision before proceeding.

I am a minor, am I eligible for rTMS treatment?

Treatment with rTMS can be applied to minors under certain conditions. For more information, please call 0208 243 8578 or send an email to info@rtms-international.co.uk.
