rTMS is a well-researched, non-invasive therapy for depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The treatment is administered briefly and intensely at the same time as cognitive behavioural therapy to improve results. Magnetic pulses are sent to the brain while you speak with one of our psychologists for around 20 minutes. Specific areas of the brain are stimulated or muted by the pulses. This aids in the communication between different sections of the brain as well as alleviating associated depressive symptoms. rTMS will never cause any damage or harm your brain. The therapy is NICE approved and has received FDA clearance.
rTMS treatment does not cause pain or other negative side effects. The coil that delivers the magnetic pulses is placed above your head during the procedure. The magnetic pulses activate certain regions of the brain, reducing depressive behaviour and/or compulsive symptoms. After the treatment, rTMS might induce a slight tension headache. This goes away on its own shortly after the therapy is finished, or you can use over-the-counter pain medication if required.
If you have been prescribed medication for your condition, rTMS treatment can still be carried out concurrently, and your medication may be phased out afterwards. Each patient is treated on a case-by-case basis; therefore, the choices will be discussed in greater depth by your clinician and decisions made based on your unique situation and treatment plan. If you want to reduce the amount of medicine you take, you can also talk to your doctor first.
rTMS International is a private practice. You do not need your doctor to refer you for treatment with us.
Between 20 and 30 rTMS treatments are generally required for long-term benefit. We propose that patients undergo talking therapy at the same time as their rTMS treatment. This can be carried out by our psychologist or with the assistance of an external provider. Because the cost of treatment depends on your condition, requirements, and preferences, it is impossible to state here how much your treatment will cost. We can nevertheless schedule an introductory meeting with you during which we'll suggest a regime that is tailored to your needs. We can then tell you how much your therapy will cost so you can make an informed decision before proceeding.
As we are a private clinic, there is typically no waiting list. You will be contacted by one of our representatives to set up an introductory meeting at rTMS International within a week of approaching us. Treatment can begin as soon as we have had sight of a recent EEG.
rTMS is a treatment for depression that was only brought to the public’s notice in the late 1990s. Since then, a plethora of scientific and clinical research has been conducted to assess the treatment's safety and optimise the processes involved. rTMS has been demonstrated to be a safe technique that, for the majority of clients, offers relief of symptoms of depression and/ or compulsive disorder. According to several studies, rTMS is effective in treating “therapy-resistant” problems. Since 2008, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has approved rTMS in the US, and since 2017, Dutch health insurance plans have covered the cost of treatment under special insurance provisions.
Your insurer can confirm whether a treatment (with or without rTMS) will be reimbursed under supplementary insurance. It's a good idea to double-check with your insurance provider before committing to any new course of treatment. There are significant differences between insurers, ranging from full coverage to no coverage at all.
rTMS is not permitted if you have:
• Implantable cardioverter defibrillators.
• Vagus nerve stimulators.
• Cochlear implants.
• Metal in or around the head, including metal plates.
• Deep brain stimulation devices.
• Ocular implants.
• Aneurysm coils.
• Implants controlled by physiological signals, including pacemakers.
If you are pregnant or planning to conceive, rTMS treatment is not advisable.
