About Dysthymic disorder

In almost three-quarters of clients with dysthymic disorder, rTMS is effective and their symptoms decrease by 75%.

A form of depression

A dysthymic disorder is a less severe type of depression. However, this condition can often be more long-lasting and persistent in nature. It is generally discovered after a person has endured two years or more with a depressive mood, as well as two or more depressive symptoms. Those who have dysthymia are frequently angry, dissatisfied, and have behavioural difficulties similar to those seen in people with depression. People with a dysthymic disorder find it hard to be happy and often feel alone. Unlike depression, they can carry on with normal, daily life, but it feels more difficult because of the disorder. A dysthymic disorder often lasts for a prolonged period time and therefore can be more serious than depression.

Positive results with rTMS treatment

rTMS therapy is highly effective in treating dysthymia. More than three-quarters of clients with a dysthymic condition respond favourably to rTMS treatment. Symptoms are reduced by around 70 per cent. In order to offer long-term, positive effects, our therapy comprises of 20-30 treatments of 20 minutes each. Prior to treatment, we hold an introductory meeting with you to better understand your depression-related issues.

rTMS may have a long-term effect on the symptoms of depression. Patients might begin to notice some positive effects after ten sessions. But in some cases, you may need maintenance treatments to continue benefitting from its anti-depressive effects. If you do, they can take place around six months or longer after your first treatment has ended.

The method in a nutshell

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) is the name of a treatment which utilises magnetic pulses to stimulate specific parts of the brain. As a result of the repetitive stimulation, the symptoms of depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder are reduced. During each session, a coil is positioned over the head and generates magnetic pulses which are sent to the brain. Each session lasts around 20 minutes.
