TMS Treatment

In light of the recent COVID-19 crisis and associated hygiene and safety precautions imposed by the UK government, rTMS International has made changes to its treatment protocols. Patients will receive a minimum of physical contact; and employees will use plastic gloves, keeping a 1-metre distance at all times.

Furthermore, before each treatment, the treatment room (including handles, coils, and pillows) will be fully disinfected. We believe that by following the latest government health and safety standards, we can continue to offer therapy in a safe and effective manner.

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of COVID-19 but are not 100 per cent sure whether you have contracted the virus, please inform us before attending your appointment. We may be unable to administer your therapy until these symptoms have disappeared. We hope you understand that these precautions are taken for your own safety, as well as ours and the general public's.

Do you suffer from depression or obsessive-compulsive disorder? Are you looking for an alternative to medication?

rTMS International uses only therapists who have undergone extensive rTMS treatment training. During your visit, your therapist will first determine where you require the treatment and what level will be most effective. You will sit in a relaxing chair as a coil is placed around your head. The coil's vibrating magnetic field stimulates the brain areas linked with depression, which feels like someone is gently tapping your head. Occasionally, rTMS can result in minor headaches; however, this is the only adverse effect that is associated with rTMS therapy.

If you have any further questions regarding the therapy, please do not hesitate to contact us at  info@rtms-international.co.uk and we will respond to you as soon as possible.

People with diagnosed depression or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) can now experience TMS treatment to improve their condition. Many people are using this recently discovered treatment, the efficacy of which is backed up by research and clinical studies.

Lasting effect and no side effects

We are different from other practices. We can help reduce or remove the symptoms of individuals’ depression or OCD. TMS treatment has no side effects, other than the small chance of a mild headache. For some people, the positive results are permanent. More than 75% of the individuals we treat report that their complaints have decreased in severity by more than half..

TMS treatment or medication?

Is your medication not working as expected? Would you rather not use any medicine at all? Then this therapy could well work for you. The distinction between medication and TMS is that TMS can target specific regions of the brain. As a consequence, there are few to no negative side effects. Antidepressants, on the other hand, enter the bloodstream and run throughout the entire body, which for many people, results in unavoidable side effects.

Are you curious about what rTMS International could do for you? You’ll find more information throughout this website on our methods and results. You can also see what your treatment plan might look like. We look forward to welcoming you to one of our treatment locations.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is where you can learn more about our methods.

Is rTMS safe?

rTMS therapy is safe for the treatment of depression and OCD. The treatment is administered to the brain only briefly, but works well in conjunction with cognitive behavioural therapy. Magnetic pulses are delivered to the brain by our practitioners while you talk with them. The pulses can cause stimulation or muting of specific regions of the brain as required. This aids communication between different sections of the brain and alleviates depressive symptoms as a result. There is no risk of any damage to your brain through this therapy. The therapy is both NICE and FDA approved.

I use medication. Can I start with rTMS?

If you're using medication to treat depression or OCD, rTMS treatment can still be carried out alongside this. You may then be able to reduce or phase out your medication thereafter. Each patient is treated on a case-by-case basis; therefore, your clinician will look at all additional factors in more depth and make decisions based on your own particular circumstances in devising your treatment plan. If you wish to decrease your medicine dosage, we can discuss this in conjunction with your prescribing doctor if you wish.

Do I require a referral from my doctor?

You do not need a doctor to refer you to rTMS International for treatment as ours is a private practice. Simply book your initial consultation and we will take things from there.

Will my insurance company pay for the cost of rTMS therapy?

Whether therapy (with or without rTMS) is reimbursed under supplementary insurance is a matter for your insurance provider. If you are relying on insurance to cover some or all of the costs of your treatment, you are advised to double-check whether this is possible with your insurer before proceeding. The differences between insurers are significant: from full payback to no coverage at all.

Is there a waiting list?

As a private practice, we do not usually have long waiting lists. Within a week of contacting us, you will be invited to an introductory meeting with rTMS International. Treatment can begin as soon as we receive confirmation that a recent EEG has been carried out and we have had an opportunity to study the results.

Does rTMS treatment hurt?

rTMS treatment is non-invasive and has minimal to no negative effects. You sit in a comfortable chair, with a coil delivering magnetic pulses positioned on your forehead. The magnetic pulses stimulate specific regions of the brain, reducing anxiety and compulsive symptoms. After rTMS treatment, you may experience a mild tension headache. This goes away on its own or if necessary, you can take an over-the-counter painkiller.

What does rTMS treatment cost?

On average, 20 to 30 rTMS sessions are necessary for long-term benefits. We advise patients to participate in a talking therapy at the same time as undergoing rTMS treatment. This may be done with our own psychologist or through an external provider. Because the price you’ll pay differs based on your situation, needs, and preferences, it's impossible to say how much your treatment will cost you until we have scheduled an introductory meeting with you. During this, we can suggest a personalised treatment plan based on your specific requirements and be completely upfront about the cost of your therapy so that you may make an informed decision before proceeding.

Why haven't I heard of rTMS before?

rTMS is a treatment for depression that was originally developed in the late 1990s. Since then, a lot of scientific and clinical research has been done to assess the therapy's safety and identify best practice in its administration. It's been determined that rTMS is a safe procedure that, for many clients, helps to decrease depression symptoms and/or compulsive complaints. Various published sources show that people with a therapy-resistant diagnosis have responded positively to treatment with rTMS. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in the US approved rTMS in 2008, and some Dutch health insurance companies have reimbursed clients for the cost of their treatment under supplementary insurance provisions since 2017.

I am a minor, am I eligible for rTMS treatment?

To be eligible for treatment with rTMS, minors must meet specific criteria. Please contact 0208 243 8578 or send an email to info@rtms-international.co.uk for more information.

More information about rTMS:

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) is a treatment for depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The treatment stimulates brain areas that regulate the patient's mood by using magnetic pulses. Studies have shown that rTMS has been effective for many people with depression who have not previously responded well to antidepressants. One in three patients have made a full recovery.

During treatment, the brain is stimulated with magnet pulses. This is a treatment for depression and other problems that does not involve any medication. There has been a great deal of research which has shown that around 75% of people with depression will get better and 60% of OCD patients see improvements in their symptoms. The FDA and NICE have both agreed that this is a safe method with almost no side effects.

More information about rTMS:

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) is an effective, non-invasive treatment for depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) that uses magnetic stimulation to stimulate areas of the brain that regulate mood. Research has shown that a large proportion of people who have not responded to antidepressants experience significant improvements in their depressive symptoms with rTMS treatment. One in three patients makes a full recovery.

During rTMS treatment, the brain is stimulated magnetically. It is a treatment in which depressive symptoms are greatly reduced or disappear without the use of medication. Much controlled scientific research has been conducted into rTMS. It has emerged that around 70% of people respond positively to treatment for depression and about 60% respond to treatment for compulsive symptoms. NICE and the American FDA have both concluded that rTMS is a safe treatment method with almost no side effects.

Who is rTMS suitable for?

The treatment is suitable for people suffering from mild to severe depression, dysthymic disorder, OCD, seasonal depression, and postpartum depression.

People who experience psychotic depression (delusions or hallucinations) cannot yet take advantage of rTMS treatment. It is also not recommended for individuals who have undergone brain surgery; have been diagnosed with severe cardiac arrhythmias or epilepsy; or for people with a cochlear implant or pacemaker.

What is rTMS?

rTMS is the acronym for Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (also known as magnetic brain stimulation). Scientific and clinical research has demonstrated that via treatment, communication between the various parts of the brain that are linked to depressive and obsessive-compulsive symptoms is enhanced.

rTMS and depression

Depression is the result of a variety of causes. These factors influence each other, making it difficult for afflicted individuals to find a path out of their condition. According to some research, depression is caused by an imbalance in the brain's chemistry. Other studies show that depression is a result of disturbed patterns in brain activity.

Stimulation of the afflicted regions of the brain improves communication and reduces the symptoms of depression. If the symptoms return (which happens in around 30% of patients), a few refresher treatments usually return the desired antidepressant effect. rTMS does not have any influence on a person's behaviour or personality.

The advantage of rTMS therapy is that there are almost no negative side effects. Medication for depression, on the other hand, enters the circulation and may therefore have a broader impact. Only the target region is affected by rTMS, as opposed to the entire body when you take medication for depression. The only known adverse effect of rTMS is a mild headache that can be alleviated with, for example, paracetamol.

Another benefit of rTMS treatment is that, after 20 to 30 treatments, patients may expect long-term, visible effects. The majority of people experience initial results within the first month (which translates to eight to 12 sessions), and it's not uncommon for the positive effects to manifest themselves sooner than this.

rTMS and depression

Depression is caused by a combination of different factors. These factors influence each other, often making it difficult for the sufferer to emerge from their condition. Research has shown that depression is caused by a disturbance in the balance of certain substances in the brain. Other research indicates that a disturbed pattern of brain activity (communication between brain areas) can cause depression. When the affected areas of the brain are stimulated repeatedly, communication improves, and the symptoms of depression will diminish. If the symptoms do return (in about 30% of patients), a few refresher sessions will usually achieve the desired antidepressant effect again. Treatment with rTMS does not affect a person’s behaviour or character. The advantage of treatment with rTMS is that there are few to no side effects. Whereas medication for depression enters the bloodstream and therefore can affect the whole body, rTMS only treats the specific area necessary. The only possible recorded side effect is a mild headache. This can easily be remedied with paracetamol, for example.Another advantage of rTMS treatment is that after 20 to 30 sessions, patients benefit from long-lasting, noticeable effects. For most people, initial results are felt within the first month (which equates to eight to 12 sessions), and sometimes even earlier than this.

Talk therapy

We propose that rTMS therapy is complemented with a talking therapy provided by our on-site psychologist. This treatment is focused on emotional and social issues (for example, how to deal with stressful situations). Such conversational therapies are critical in order to avoid depression relapse. The rTMS therapy alleviates depressive symptoms, enabling talking therapies to be more effective.

How does brain stimulation work in practice?

Only rTMS professionals who have received specialised training can perform rTMS treatment. The therapist determines where and how strongly you will need the therapy when you arrive for your appointment. You relax in a comfortable chair and a coil is placed in a specific location on your head. The pulsating magnetic field generated by the coil activates the specific brain areas linked to depression. This sensation is similar to that of having a pencil or a tiny hammer tapped lightly against your head. Occasionally, this might cause a mild headache. However, this is the only adverse effect experienced as a result of rTMS treatment.

If you have any further questions, please email us at info@rtms-international.co.uk and we will respond as quickly as possible.
